In response to the recent and powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck over the weekend, the Davao City government has taken swift action to prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents. Acting Mayor Melchor Quitain Jr. announced a series of measures aimed at mitigating potential risks and ensuring the community's safety.

In an official statement released on Sunday, Acting Mayor Quitain ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in all public educational institutions within the city. Simultaneously, he extended a heartfelt appeal to private schools to follow suit and suspend their classes for the same duration.

Furthermore, recognizing the need for a proactive approach, the city government has instituted work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for all national and local government offices operating within Davao City. This directive also applies to government-owned and -controlled corporations. Offices engaged in essential services such as safety and security, health, social services, disaster management, and emergency response remain exempt from this arrangement.

The adoption of WFH measures in government offices aims to limit the congregation of individuals in enclosed spaces, reducing the risk of potential aftershocks. Acting Mayor Quitain has emphasized the importance of protecting government employees while ensuring that essential services continue uninterrupted.

In addition to government offices, the city administration has encouraged private offices and establishments to adopt WFH arrangements as well. This move aligns with the city's commitment to prioritizing the safety and convenience of all residents, including those employed in the private sector.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, sent shockwaves through the region and prompted the city government to take these precautionary measures to safeguard its citizens. Davao City remains vigilant, with emergency response teams and local authorities monitoring the situation closely.

Residents have been urged to stay informed through official channels and to adhere to safety guidelines provided by local authorities. The Davao City government will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as necessary, with the primary focus being the safety and welfare of its residents during this challenging period.
