The local government of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental plans to spend between P3 million and P3.5 million to recover and preserve the bones of a Sperm Whale discovered dead on the shores of Sitio Sakalig, Barangay Sugal, Jose Abad Santos, on May 21.

JAS mayor Jason John Joyce said they want to preserve the bones of the Sperm whale so that future generations can see it.
Joyce said he hoped to preserve the bones at a small museum constructed in his town.
He said the construction of a small museum is costly, so he coordinates with the Department of Tourism to finance it.
"I am coordinating with DOT as to how they can help. We hope to have a museum, even a low-cost one, for the future generations to see the whale," Joyce said.
Joyce revealed that it was not the first time a whale's carcass was found on their shorelines.
He said they also recorded the beaching of marine mammals in 2013, 2015, and 2016.
