A community-based rehabilitation center for stroke patients opened on Tuesday, October 27, in Barangay Tibungco, Davao City, according to the Daily Tribune. The facility is meant to bring rehabilitation and recovery services closer to residents, especially stroke survivors who need ongoing medical care.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte led the opening with Sen. Christopher "Bong" Go, who joined the ribbon-cutting at the mayor's invitation. Go was in the area for the blessing and turnover of the nearby Tibungco Super Health Center.

Go said the center could reduce the need for patients to travel to hospitals for therapy, particularly those who have trouble with mobility, coordination and speech after a stroke. He also said accessible rehabilitation services could ease the financial and caregiving burdens carried by families of stroke survivors.

The senator pointed to Republic Act 11959, the Regional Specialty Centers Act, which he principally authored and sponsored. The law requires specialty centers in Department of Health (DOH) hospitals across the regions, covering services such as cardiovascular care, brain and spine disorders, and physical rehabilitation. In Davao City, the Southern Philippines Medical Center offers specialized cardiovascular care along with cancer, lung, neonatal and trauma services. Go has also backed the development of cardiac catheterization facilities at the hospital.

The Tibungco Super Health Center, located near the new rehabilitation facility, is intended to widen access to primary care, including consultations, diagnostic procedures and preventive services.

Go called for continued coordination among the DOH, local governments and health workers so that community facilities have enough personnel, equipment and resources.

Also present were Councilors Richlyn "Che-che" Justol and Danilo Dayanghirang, Barangay Tibungco Captain Merjade Calvo, City Health Officer Dr. Margie Roa-Rubio, and DOH Region XI Officer-in-Charge Assistant Regional Director Dr. Grace Amistoso.

Why it matters for Davao

Stroke survivors and their families in Tibungco and nearby areas can now access rehabilitation closer to home, which may reduce travel and caregiving costs.
