A community-based rehabilitation center for stroke patients has opened in Barangay Tibungco, Davao City, bringing recovery services closer to residents who need continued medical care after a stroke, according to the Daily Tribune.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte and Sen. Christopher "Bong" Go led the ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, 27 October. Go attended at the mayor's invitation while in the area for the blessing and turnover of the nearby Tibungco Super Health Center.

Go said the new facility could reduce the need for patients to travel to hospitals for rehabilitation, especially those who have trouble moving, keeping their coordination or speaking after a stroke. He added that accessible rehabilitation services can ease the financial and caregiving burdens carried by families of stroke survivors.

The senator pointed to Republic Act 11959, the Regional Specialty Centers Act, which he principally authored and sponsored. The law requires Department of Health hospitals across the regions to set up specialty centers, including services for heart conditions, brain and spine disorders, and physical rehabilitation. In Davao City, the Southern Philippines Medical Center already offers specialized cardiovascular care along with cancer, lung, neonatal and trauma services, and Go has backed the development of cardiac catheterization facilities there, the report said.

The Tibungco Super Health Center, located near the rehabilitation facility, is meant to widen access to primary care such as medical consultations, diagnostic procedures and preventive services.

Go called on the Department of Health, local governments and health workers to keep coordinating so that community health facilities have enough staff, equipment and resources.

Also present were Davao City Councilors Richlyn "Che-che" Justol and Danilo Dayanghirang, Barangay Tibungco Captain Merjade Calvo, City Health Officer Dr. Margie Roa-Rubio, and Dr. Grace Amistoso, officer-in-charge assistant regional director of the Department of Health Region XI.

Why it matters for Davao

Stroke survivors and their families in and around Tibungco may now access rehabilitation closer to home, which officials said could reduce travel, costs and caregiving strain.
