A fire tore through about 1,200 square meters of Barangay Matina Aplaya in Davao City in the early hours of Sunday, Oct. 25, according to the Mindanao Times. No casualties, injuries or missing persons were reported.

Fire Senior Inspector Frances Mae Sendrijas, spokesperson of the Davao City Fire District, said the emergency call came in at around 4:27 a.m. from San Nicolas, Baryo Baki, in Punta Dumalag.

Responding firefighters raised the first alarm at 4:44 a.m. as the flames quickly spread to neighbouring structures. Six minutes later, at 4:50 a.m., the response was elevated to second alarm, bringing in more water tankers and firefighting units.

Crews declared the fire under control at 5:55 a.m. and fully extinguished at 6:34 a.m.

Arson investigators are assessing the site to establish how many houses were destroyed, how many families and individuals were displaced, what caused the fire and how much damage it caused, the fire district said.

GMA Davao separately reported that around 47 families, or 144 individuals, were affected.

Why it matters for Davao

Dozens of families in the Matina Aplaya coastal community may need assistance, and the official count of displaced residents and the cause of the fire are still pending from arson investigators.

Praying for the families in Matina Aplaya. If you know of donation drives or drop-off points for those affected by the fire, please post them here so readers can help.
