Matunog stated on October 24 at the Kapehan sa Dabaw media forum that Converge ICT Solutions Inc. and PLDT are part of the consortium investing in an international submarine cable for internet connectivity.

Converge will have a landing station in Davao City, while PLDT will have one in Digos City. Matunog stated that the target year for both is 2024.

"In addition to the international gateway of Globe, which connects us to the west coast of the United States, two additional international landing stations will be established... In effect, three submarine cables will connect us to the internet, directly to Mindanao, which is critical," he said.

The additional submarine cables would improve the efficiency and reliability of the country's internet connection. He believes this is significant because many Filipinos rely on the internet for work.

"The international cable landing stations will ensure that our infrastructure is resilient, and that we have enough speed and capacity to ensure (connectivity) even if we don't have enough (speed and capacity to ensure connectivity for everyone)," he said.

Matunog, on the other hand, stated that the country, or even the region, has no problems with current internet speeds; it all depends on how much consumers can pay for their connection. He claimed that more expensive internet providers would provide faster internet speeds.

However, it may also be determined by the devices. Mobile phones, for example, are not the most dependable because they are wirelessly connected and signals are frequently disrupted by a variety of factors.

"The capacity you have and the amount of money you can afford are the most important factors in fiber optic connections." "The speed, wala tayo limit (We don't have a speed limit)," Matunog said.
