“We’re seeing the summer months as high-consuming months because of the temperature. Ang demand went up talaga. March went up by ten percent versus in the month of February,” Davao Light president and chief operating officer Rodger Velasco said on March 29 during a media forum.
Considering this, Davao Light reassured that they can meet all of their customers' needs for power and that the weather has no impact on supply.
The potential El Nio event, which could happen later in the year, won't significantly affect Mindanao's power supply, according to Velasco.
The dry season may have an impact on hydropower, but there are still other options, including coal and diesel. According to Velasco, there is still a 1,000 megawatt surplus on the Mindanao system.
“We have more than enough for Mindanao. If you are wary about supply, we are not. Normal operations with all the plans, we have certainly enough supply for the summer months,” the Davao Light executive said.
