A busy junction in downtown Davao is just a few blocks away from the one-story souvenir shopping complex. On December 31, Aldevinco closed its store to make room for a high-rise condominium.
Aldevinco "quietly shuttered its doors, ending the renowned local landmark's five-decade history of functioning along CM Recto St. and Roxas Ave," according to its owner, Alsons Development and Investment Corp. (Alsons Dev).
As the tenants of Aldevinco prepare to move into their new and improved home, Poblacion Market Central, the same can be said for the Aldevinco tenants.
The Central Market of Poblacion is being built along C. Last year, the construction of Bangoy Street in the old location of the Madrazo Fruit Stand, about 100 meters from Aldevinco's other intersection, was completed.
According to Alsons Dev, the new Poblacion building will house 66 percent of the Aldevinco building's tenants, or 59 out of 90 establishments. Aldevinco's stores had been relocated to a nearby shopping center.
Through the Poblacion Market Central, the firm declared it would continue Aldevinco's history of fostering local and Mindanaoan culture, heritage, and identity.
Poblacion's significant debut was hosting Mindanao Art 2021, the region's largest celebration of creativity featuring the works of over 300 artists from all over the country, which drew thousands of art lovers last October, according to the statement.
A selected mix of some of Davao's top art, retail, and culinary firms were asked to set up pop-up stores in the same spirit that Poblacion Market Central reopened its doors last December to hold its first-ever Christmas event dubbed Pasko sa Poblacion." Customers were provided an exciting array of shopping and dining options while local artists, crafters, and entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to promote their works and products as the perfect gifts for Christmas."
