“Currently, pharmacists are very much involved in this endeavor in encouraging the public to use generic brands because these drugs, although, they are inexpensive they are also effective. Ang mga tao kasi they think that if it’s cheap, it’s not effective,” Anjelie Noble Asis, SPMC clinical pharmacist, said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao on Monday.

She stated that SPMC has been promoting generic medicine use by urging its doctors and physicians to use generic terms when writing prescriptions.

Asis cited the Generics Act of 1988, also known as Republic Act No. 6675, which establishes the policy to promote, mandate, and assure adequate supply, use, and acceptance of pharmaceuticals (including those for animal use) designated by their generic names.

She also stated that not all medications have generic equivalents because most branded drugs are patent-protected.

"I believe the Department of Health is conducting a large-scale social media campaign." "As you can see, the generic name is highlighted in the back while the brand name is not as visible as the generic names," she explained.

Since the passage of RA No. 6675, the month of September has been designated as Generics Awareness Month.

Asis stated that the SPMC had planned activities for the celebration.

SPMC is a government-owned medical center that serves people from all across Mindanao.
