In a recent interview on Davao City Disaster Radio, Baloran stated that the signage placed within or along earthquake fault lines are pieces of information to guide residents to take safety precautions in the event of an earthquake.
“According to Phivolcs kung naa’y ground shaking naa gyud tendency nga molihok ang atoang fault lines so isip pagpahibalo advance information pud sa atoang kaigsoonan, makabantay sila, makahimo sila’g lakang ug unsa’y dapat i-prepare. And another thing is if aduna sila’y plano nga magpatindog og building at least makabalo sila unsa ang requirements nga dapat nila sundon aron ilang mga projects resilient sa linog (According to Phivolcs, if there is ground shaking there is tendency that the fault lines will move. So, the signage is there to notify and give advance information to the public so that they can prepare. Also, if they have plans to construct buildings at least they will know the requirements to be followed to ensure that the project is resilient to earthquake),” Baloran said.
Baloran said the areas with identified fault lines such as the Lacson Fault and Dacudao Fault were identified during the “Walk-the-Fault” jointly conducted in 2019 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in coordination with the barangay officials.
He said these areas have been marked but these signs should not cause alarm as these serve as information or awareness that there are fault lines in their area.
Baloran said that Phivolcs gave the city a copy of the Metro Davao Site Response Atlas for the use of the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) and Office of the City Building Office (OCBO) to be guided on which areas require separate requirements.
This atlas contains a detailed compilation of specific earthquake ground motion levels and site response hazard maps that would enhance the seismic resiliency of residential and medium-to-high rise buildings in Metro Davao.
The atlas includes maps that provide information to understand the ground motion characteristics of underlying rock and sediment deposits and ground motion response that may occur in Metro Davao in the event of an earthquake. CIO
