According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the most recent 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred on Thursday, April 21, at 5:57 a.m., 82 kilometers east of the municipality of Manay (Phivolcs).

The earthquake caused an Intensity IV tremor in Mati City, as well as the municipalities of Manay and San Isidro. Intensity III was felt in Baganga, Tarragona, and Cateel municipalities, as well as Davao City and Panabo City.

But a magnitude 6.2 earthquake first struck last April 19. It was first registered as magnitude 5.8 but was eventually raised by Phivolcs. An intensity IV shake was felt in the entire province.

Fortunately, the series of intense earthquakes did not cause direct threat or damages despite its strong magnitude.

“There was no evacuation conducted (and) so far walang (there are no) reported damages that resulted from the series of tremors,” said Ben Tesiorna, information officer of Mati City Information Office (CIO).

He said the Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) is monitoring the integrity of infrastructures and buildings in Mati City. The local government units also frequently participate in earthquake and other safety drills.

“History showed that one of the biggest tremors happened in Mati. So with that in mind, our CDRRMO and other agencies concerned are always prepare for any emergencies,” Tesiorna said.

A series of earthquakes not exceeding magnitude IV were felt throughout the rest of the day on April 19.

Mati CIO said the smaller quakes were considered as aftershocks caused by the magnitude 6.2.
