To deal with the overcrowding of students, some Davao City schools and teachers have implemented double-shift classes.
"Because students have a tendency to be lazy, we worry a lot about them, especially when it comes to commuting or pauli. Mas maayo hayag pa makauli na sila, and gyud malikayan namo ang third shift as much as possible. "Pero kung mag third shift na gyud mao na siya nga katapusan na gyud na solusyon para sa tanan," said DepEd 11 spokesperson Jenielito "Dodong" Atillo during the AFP PNP Press Corps media briefing on Wednesday at The Royal Mandaya Hotel (TRMH).
The double shift starts at 5:30 or 6 a.m. and the second shift at 12:30 p.m.
“Kay if we will not do that mag spillover ta hangtod sa hapon na. We are doing that para dili siya muabot sa hapon na kaayo because it’s quite important also to employ and to make sure that the security of children will be in place,” he said.
Atillo clarified that double shift classes are not being implemented in all schools in the Davao Region. Only a few and mostly in urban areas, which are frequented by parents and are experiencing overpopulation problems. He also stated that the majority of the schools in the region continue to operate on a single shift.
He emphasized that even when schools are overcrowded, they can still refuse new students.
He also clarified that teachers who work double shifts do not receive a pay raise.
“We succumb to the salary standardization law and salary laws in the country. It does not mean na sayo sila muadto madungagan ang ilang suweldo. Naa tay ginasunod na proseso sa pag increase sa suweldo ug benepesyo sa mga magtutudlo,” he said.
He added that there is an additional hazard pay to the teachers in hazardous areas.
“Pero naay requirement dinha na mga lugar na hazardous in terms of safety, no road network at all, ingon ana ang dugang na benepesyo na ginahatag sa balaod,” he said.
