Crowd joining the thanksgiving party of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte burst into wild applause upon his arrival at the venue at past 8 p.m. on Saturday.

As Duterte ascended onto the stage, the people were shouting "Duterte ... Duterte ... Duterte."

Members of the Presidential Security Group further tightened security for Duterte upon his arrival at the party venue inside the Davao City Crocodile Farm.

Earlier, rock bands and break dancers entertained the crowd, which began to build from mid-morning under overcast skies, a report by Agence France-Presse said.

The city of less than two million last month saw its long-time mayor Duterte win a landslide election victory. His six-year term as president starts on June 30.

The 71-year-old Duterte swept the poll by more than six million votes on a campaign pledge to wipe out crime and stopping corruption in government.
Nearly 200,000 people have occupied the venue as of 3:30 pm.

Although the venue boasts of spacious fields, attendees have to squeeze together to watch the program.
